Dogs may use strollers for a variety of reasons, although it's less common compared to using strollers for small children. Pet strollers, which are essentially small wagons with a canopy or enclosure, are designed for taking dogs on leisurely walks, jogs, or trips. They provide a comfortable and secure space for smaller dogs, puppies, or senior dogs that may have difficulty walking long distances.
Here are some reasons why some pet parents might use strollers for their dogs:
Senior Dogs: Older dogs may have mobility issues, arthritis, or other health conditions that make it difficult for them to walk for extended periods. A dog stroller can provide a comfortable and safe way for your senior dogs to enjoy the outdoors without straining themselves. If your senior dog's mobility is limited, a stroller can help you take them on short walks or outings to provide some physical activity, fresh air and socialization.Soothe your OCD desires to keep your house from looking like a doggy day care, and keep your dog safe at the same time with these modern acrylic dog gates for for doorways. ]]>One of the biggest questions when looking to purchase a dog bed is the difference between an orthopedic dog bed and a memory foam dog bed. Here is an explanation of the two. And some examples of high-quality products.
]]>As responsible dog parents, we want our pets to be comfortable, warm and protected. Not all dogs are the same, and not all dog beds are the same. Our dogs prefer different sleeping positions. My Irish Setter loves to sleep curled up in a ball snug as a bug. My Lhasa Apso will pass out and then literally sleep on her back with all fours in the air. The method by which they will fall asleep is also completely different. The larger dog climbs in the bed and spins before laying down. The smaller dog must "dig" or "burrow" for a good ten minutes before she will finally settle. Of course, when we watch her and giggle, she stops and looks at us as if to say, I am not doing this for your entertainment!
Understand how your pup likes to sleep. Observe your dog's sleep style and note whether the dog sleeps in a ball, back, or the tummy. Depending on the sleep style, it will help you choose the right bed for your dog: a calming dog bed, an orthopedic dog bed, an elevated sofa style bed, or a nesting dog bed.
If you have a dog that likes to burrow, we bet you have wondered why. Admittedly, it is quite humorous to watch, that is for sure! There seems to be no exact reason why our pets like to burrow and dig. There are a few things that might explain this behavior, though. A few breeds burrow because it is instinctual behavior, which means they are born with this habit ingrained. They love to burrow treasures they find and even themselves. Terriers and Dachshunds are known to flush out small creatures from underground tunnels by burrowing.
Huskies and other large breed dogs are known to burrow under the snow in the extreme cold to stay warm. Burrow beds are great for Hounds, Terriers, and Sighthounds. Any other breed of dog that enjoys burrowing will also benefit from a burrow bed. Like humans, your dog will burrow to find comfort and warmth and to relieve stress. Burrow style is one the very best dog beds for large dogs.

High-quality and stylish pet collection from the iconic brand Pendleton
The Pendleton Vintage Camp Heather Green Cuddler is a top choice dog bed among pet parents. These beautiful dog beds come in sizes small, medium, large and XL at an affordable prize.
The older dog needs a different kind of bed. If you notice that your older dog is having a more challenging time moving in the morning or tossing and turning at night, it may be wise to purchase an orthopedic dog bed. These types of mattresses provide added comfort and support. As our dogs age, they can suffer from conditions like arthritis and hip dysplasia.
One of the biggest questions when looking to purchase a dog bed is the difference between an orthopedic and memory foam bed. Here is an explanation of the two. And some examples of high-quality products.
The orthopedic dog bed is specifically designed to support the bones, joints, and pet's body. The orthopedic dog bed provides safety, comfort and helps to relieve pain. These dog beds stimulate proper joint and bone alignment. Be advised; an orthopedic dog bed can be made using memory foam. Memory foam adjusts to the shape of your dogs' body and offers comfortable support. Memory foam also provides security because it hugs the body closely. Memory foam is also exceptionally durable. Orthopedic dog beds filled with fiber or small particles of just any material do not offer the same comfort and pain relief. Our recommendation? Take a look at one of our best selling product PAIKKA ORTHOPEDIC BED for recovery.
PAIKKA Orthopedic Recovery Bed
We absolutely recommend this orthopedic dog bed to all, but especially very active, cold sensitive or senior dogs will benefit from it the most.
There are memory foam dog beds that are not considered orthopedic but are very well made and durable. If your pup is ordinarily healthy and active, the regular memory foam bed is a great option. These beds offer safety and comfort to the dog.
Fall in love with the wonderful design of PENDLETON ACADIA PET NAPPER and give your pup the comfort of a high-quality memory foam dog bed.
Our dogs are part of the family, and we want to bring them with us wherever we go. Having a dog bed that ravels and cleans easily is a must-have. The outdoor pet bed makes it possible to bring our pups camping and to other outdoor events. Cleaning is super easy with a hose or by throwing the bed in the washing machine.
Choosing the perfect dog bed for your pup may take a bit of research, but it is well worth it. Choosing a bed that offers security and comfort is essential. As pet parents, we want the best for our pups and stop at nothing to make sure they are loved and comfortable.
Last but not least, don't forget to shop for a warm and soft dog blanket as veterinarians advise dog owners to provide extra warmth and comfort with pet blankets. Especially smaller dogs, regardless of coat thickness, will have a harder time keeping themselves warm. Discover our full collection of dog blankets and throws on Wunderpets & Co.
]]>Brownie, Bowie and Brooklyn had no idea our family life was about to change - forever. My three rescue cats joined our Brooklyn family only a few years ago and they were about to embark on a new chapter of our lives. We were New Yorkers for 20 years and decided to make a quantum leap to sunny California.
To Fly or Drive with Cats, That Is the Question
Once I started thinking through the moving plans, I realized I needed practical tips to cross-country moving with cats. I had no idea how to transfer our three cats from Brooklyn to Los Angeles. At first, the idea of taking a family road trip with kids and pets appealed to me on many levels. The notion of a family road trip sounds far less stressful and a lot more fun. The cats would be safe with us and I would not have to worry about "an airline pet cargo" situation which I thought was more stressful and dangerous.
Below is the compilation of practical tips and advice that were shared with me to drive across the country with cats in the car. Driving with cats can be stressful too, so I hope below points will be helpful:
How do you travel in a car with a cat long distance?
Drive together across the country with your cats with this super comfortable, modular pet travel carrier from Wild One. Also airline compliant. Shop Wild One Travel Carrier in Tan Color at Wunderpets
Why I decided to fly with my cats from Brooklyn to Los Angeles?
As suggested, we planned a four hour test-drive to upstate NY with the kids and our cats. After the trip, my husband and I decided that the cats would definitely fly to California. Not only we had overly active children who complained a lot, we also had teenager cats at age 7 months, 18 months and 2 years old. How did the test drive go? The car was utter chaos with cats screeching for their lives and kids accusing us of animal cruelty. The little cat was always out of the crate sleeping on my 12 year old's laps (she refused to keep him inside the crate) while my 7 year old son constantly nagged it was his turn to hold the cat. An hour into the 4 hour car drive, the cats threw up one by one, Brownie had an explosive diarrhea, my daughter got cramps from sleeping the cat in her laps, my son lost his mind and my marriage almost ended.
We were NOT going to drive for 10 days with kids or cats.
How do you transport cats across states? From New York to Los Angeles ✈️
The safest way for any animal to fly is in the cabin as carry-on luggage, provided that's an option but in truth, millions of animals make it through a plane flight in the cargo unharmed each year. My cats travelled in the cargo and it ended up being a safe travel option for us. Most airlines require a valid health certificate for travel completed by your veterinarian in order for your cat to fly in the cargo. I flew my cats with American Airlines and cannot recommend them enough. Animals can travel in-cabin with American Airlines, as checked baggage and also as unaccompanied cargo. That being said, American Airlines has a strict pet policy in place so it’s best to know ahead of time what you can and cannot do/bring when flying with your furry friend. It is NOT a simple process. I will try to explain why.
It is stressful to drop your best friend off for a flight and say goodbye. With Petmate Sky Kennel Pet Carrier, you can put your mind at ease knowing they will be safe in this durable & heavy duty carrier. I chose 21" carrier for my big cat Bowie - who had plenty of space to stretch & sleep.
How can I sedate my cat for air travel?
You Don't! At one point, I had to stop my mind from spinning with negative thoughts and get over the fact that my cats will HAVE TO fly unaccompanied in pet cargo with American Airlines. They will be brave and cargo will be safe. Although I read on the internet that many vets prescribe sedatives for animals to relax during the trip, my trusted and long-time vet in Brooklyn advised against it. She said except in unusual circumstances, veterinarians should not dispense sedatives for animals that are to be transported. Air travel may increase the risk of heart and respiratory problems if pets are drugged. I then found out American Airlines won't even accept sedated/tranquilized dogs and cats - knowingly. Like I said, they are VERY strict before accepting the animals to the flight so be aware! We were sent home due to minor paper work errors and I would not want that to happen to anyone else.
My cats Bowie & Brooklyn seem to be calm and collected while check-in. This is a picture my husband sent from JFK while I anxiously awaited to pick them up from LAX in the afternoon.
What do you need to buy for your cat's air travel?
My cats are too large for cabin travel and barely fit in the required carry-on bags. Therefore, I made reservations with American Airlines PETEMBARK. All I had to buy ahead of time were crates, pads and water bottle. I didnot leave food inside the crates as I knew my cats would be ok without food for up to 12 hours. After all, everyone can benefit from an intermittent fasting. Airlines did require for us to tape some food on the crate, incase of an emergency or long delays. You can see it on the picture above. Thankfully, we had no such problems during their journey. To learn more about transporting animals, kennel guidelines, policies & restrictions and documentations visit this American Airlines Pet Cargo link.

Is the cargo area safe for pet travel?
In my experience, YES! Turns out, it is not scary or unsafe at all. I had a lot of paranoias but in the end, my cats came to LA in one piece (I mean how many pieces of them was I expecting?!!!), looking completely happy and healthy. I was pleasantly surprised. They didn't look distressed AT ALL when I picked them up. American Airlines texted AND emailed me before arrival which was very helpful. Minutes after the plane landed, they were ready for pick up at the cargo entrance of LAX. My friend who was driving didn't even have to park the car. In and out, I picked up the cats from the claim room quickly. How amazing is that?!
Traveling cross-country with our cat in-cabin
We have three cats and I hate to admit, we favor the youngest one the most. Brooklyn, clearly named after our beloved home-town, is all white and the sweetest cat in the world. At the time he was only about 8 months old. Shy and timid - he still weighed only a few pounds compare to his giant older brothers. I convinced my husband to fly him in cabin and he agreed.
They flew Alaskan Airlines and sat next to a lovely guy who also loved cats. I'm told the flight attendants were very friendly and let my cat dad keep the carrier on his laps through the ride - except for take off and landing. Here's a picture of him letting Brooklyn peek out. He said our kitty cat slept through the whole trip and / or just sat quietly in his carrier. Brooklyn travelled with Wild One Pet Carrier in black color and you can shop it here at Wunderpets & Co.

Moving cross-country with cats was a more of an emotional roller-coaster for me than actual work. There is a lot written on the internet to worry pet parents and while it's good to be in the know, I witnessed first hand that the Airline personnel make every effort to handle these animals with the care they deserve to assure the safest trip for your pet. Flying my cats cross country with American Airlines was a very good and safe experience for us.
Again, keep in mind the pet policies vary among airlines. It’s best to check directly with your airline when flying your cat to ensure you and your cat arrive at your destination safely.

]]>All cat owners want their kitties to be warm, safe, and comfortable. And OFF of sofas, furniture and human beds!
Cats are finicky creatures and paying attention to their needs is crucial when choosing a bed especially for them. For example, cat breeds with short fur, or no fur such as Sphynx prefer a warm faux-fur bed. But for large size cats such as Maine Coon, you should consider large size cat beds as they like to stretch. Also, senior cats that have stiff joints will benefit from warm cat beds for complete comfort. In this article, we will learn about the various types of cat beds so you can buy the right bed for your cat with confidence.
Choosing the right cat bed involves considering your cat's preferences, size, age, and any special needs they may have. For example: Look for a round bed if your cat generally likes to curl into a ball. Try a cave bed if your cat loves burrowing beneath a basket of clothing. A cushion pet bed could be your best choice if your cat prefers to sprawl out on a windowsill or stretch on a sofa.
Your cat's bed should be spacious enough for it to spread out or small enough for it to snuggle up and feel safe, depending on its sleeping preferences. If your cat prefers to lounge in the open and on the floor and find a bed that is the same length as its body (excluding the tail) about 18 to 20 inches long. If your cat loves to cuddle up, a circular bolster or cave bed with a diameter of at least 15 inches is a smart bet—but don't rule out bigger enclosed beds, which provide the security some cats desire while still allowing them to stretch out when required. A larger bed is usually ideal if your cat is a large breed, such as a British shorthair or a Maine Coon.
To keep your sanity, choose a machine-washable cat bed and carefully follow the care directions since even little changes in the washer or dryer can cause a cat bed to bunch or rip.
Now, let us talk about the best cat beds to get for your kitty, including heated, rounded cat beds, washable cat beds, cat caves, cat towers, and more.
Here are some top rated cat bed options from some of the best selling cat furniture brands:
It's not easy to find high-quality, visually attractive cat furniture. The majority of cat scratching posts, cat trees, and cat towers with beds sold at large box retailers are ugly and quickly fall apart. A cat tower is a work of art in and of itself! They usually include built-in features for cats to utilize and play in, such as ramps, tunnels, perches, and beds. If you have many cats, large cat towers are ideal since they provide varied areas for them to lie. Older cats don't play as much as younger cats; therefore, cat towers are excellent for them.
Take a look at WunderPets & Co pet boutique’s carefully selected cat furniture selection for the finest cat tower beds if you want to buy and invest in quality cat furniture that's elegant, modern and trendy.
On a low or warm setting, heating pads are generally safe for cats and kittens. If you're still concerned about the safety of your cat, we recommend Miacara's Capello, the warmest cat bed on the market. Cats, like humans, are cold-sensitive. They like fleece and wool materials, such as cat blankets and faux- fur cat beds, to remain warm. This adorable cute cat bed is composed of plush fake fur and will keep your furry companion warm and comfy on cold winter days. It's an ideal self-heating cat bed for kittens as well as older cats that may suffer from joint stiffness. A modern cat bed to fit your home decor.
Is it common for your cat to stretch out on your bed, sofa or do nothing except lie down in the center of the floor? Have you got a big cat like a Main Coon, Norwegian Forest Cat, or Rag Doll? Then a plush sleeping mat could be the best option for your cat.
Tavolino side table is a cat bed in disguise. The wooden tabletop is the perfect place for your coffee, books and magazines, while the cat bed at the bottom is crafted from soft formfleece to create a comfortable hideaway for your cat.
Remember that cats can be particular about their sleeping spots, and what works for one cat may not work for another. It's a good idea to place the new bed near their favorite sleeping spot initially to encourage them to use it. Over time, they may come to love their new bed.
To help you make an informed purchasing decision, WunderPets & Co. curated the best cat beds on the market, so you can easily pick the bed that's perfect for your cat!

In addition to creating quality products, their commitment to our environment is also what makes Pendleton brand our #1 choice for dog beds. Pendleton fiber filled Kuddler dog beds feature a high loft fiber that's made from 100% recycled plastic bottles. Since opening in 2001, Pendleton diverted over 33,000,000 bottles from landfills!
"A very plush, calming dog bed with thick fleece and lots of stuffing. My elderly Greyhound loves it! We got the XL for our 80 lb. Ridgeback as well and the girls love it! We love our large Pendleton dog beds."
Above Pendleton Vintage Camp Heather Dog Napper. This beautiful and high-quality Pendleton dog bed is inspired by the Vintage Camps of America and feature the bold colors of the Pendleton Yakima blanket patterns on a jacquard knitted berber fabric with coordinating faux suede accents. Our recommendation is to match a napper / dog pillow bed with a bolster Kuddler Pendleton dog bed (aka a dog cuddler) bed so your puppy has multiple safe places at home to lounge or fall sound a sleep.
The types of breeds that need a large dog bed include most breeds over 25-30 pounds. Finding the best dog beds can be challenging for big breed owners. Therefore most large dogs end up sleeping on rugs and hard floors. However, sleeping on the floor is not always healthy for them. Orthopedic dog beds are the best choice for large and senior dogs as they help ease the pain and discomfort of hip dysplasia, arthritis, or other structural ailments.

But what makes chocolate toxic to dogs and why is it that some dogs ingest it and don’t get sick? Here are some facts to clear up some of the confusion surrounding chocolate toxicity in dogs.
Chocolate can indeed be toxic to dogs. In fact, it is one of the 20 most reported poisonings. The ingredient in chocolate that causes the toxicity is theobromine. The minimum toxic level of theobromine is 100-200mg/kg with 250-500mg/kg being the level at which half of the dogs would die as a result of consuming chocolate. So what does that mean as far as how much chocolate is toxic? The level of theobromine varies depending on the type of chocolate. The levels of theobromine are listed below:
Type of Chocolate | Theobromine level |
---|---|
Milk Chocolate | 60 mg/oz |
Baking Chocolate | 450 mg/oz |
Semi-sweet Chocolate | 260 mg/oz |
Hot Chocolate | 12 mg/oz |
White Chocolate | 1 mg/oz |
Given these levels, 4 oz of milk chocolate contains about 240mg of theobromine. Considering that the average chocolate bar contains 2-3 oz of milk chocolate, it would take 2-3 candy bars to produce toxicity in a 10 lb dog. However, a single ounce of baking chocolate could produce severe toxicity in the same size dog.
So, how does chocolate make dogs sick? Theobromine causes the release of certain substances, norepinephrine and epinephrine, that cause an increase in the dog’s heart rate and can cause arrhythmias. Other signs seen with chocolate toxicity can include increased urination, vomiting, diarrhea or hyperactivity within the first few hours. This can lead to hyperthermia, muscle tremors, seizures, coma and even death.
What should be done if a dog does ingest a toxic amount of chocolate? If it has been less than 2 hours, the dog should be made to vomit. Unfortunately, chocolate tends to form a ball in the stomach and may be difficult to remove. Supportive care should be provided for any other signs the dog is exhibiting.
Though it may not be harmful to the dog in small quantities, it is safer to avoid giving chocolate to dogs in general. As with everything else, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Ethylene glycol is a highly toxic liquid commonly used as antifreeze in car radiators. Other sources include heat-exchange fluids sometimes used in solar collectors and icerink freezing equipment, and some brake and transmission fluids, as well as diethylene glycol used in color film processing.
When the temperature outside begins to drop, not only does it remind us about Christmas but also sets everyone into “winterizing” mood, antifreeze poisoning becomes a common small animal toxicity. As a part of routine vehicle maintenance, we change antifreeze and seldom think how we dispose it. Unfortunately, this poison has a sweet taste and often gets “cleaned up” by our four-legged friends. Poor animals! They have no clue what they are getting into by licking antifreeze spills! Sometimes it takes only 1 or 2 teaspoons of ethylene glycol to be ingested to cause severe illness or even death.
Under the influence of certain metabolic changes, ethylene glycol is metabolized into glycolic acid, which causes severe, sometime irreversible, kidney damage. As a result, the animal becomes unable to eliminate the toxin from the body, which leads to neurological signs.
Most of the time you don’t, because you haven’t witnessed them drinking it. However, you can easily tell that your pet “isn’t doing right”. Peak blood concentration occurs in 1- 3 hrs after ingestion. At this time, you may see signs of alcohol intoxication: depression, knuckling, vomiting or difficulty standing. As time goes by, the animal’s signs may begin to worsen and become totally uncoordinated, or even start to seizure.
It is critical to have your pet checked by a veterinarian as soon as possible! Don’t waste time! There’s medication available to help your pet recover, but it is effective only in early stage of the illness.
But best of all, it is always easier to prevent intoxication than treat it. Let’s make sure that our animals have no opportunity to ingest such a lethal poison by keeping all the containers closed when not in use and cleaning up any spills immediately.
A few plants here and there can add the finishing touches to a room. Although it may have been ‘just what the room needed’ some of these additions can be dangerous for your four legged family members. This article will hit on a few of the common plants that maybe around the house that could cause some problems.
This is just a small list of some common toxic houseplants. If you suspect your animal has ingested part of a plant call your veterinarian immediately. If your animal is having serious complications, like breathing difficulties, get them to a clinic as soon as possible. Important information for the veterinarian includes: what kind and what part of the plant was eaten (if possible), how much, and how long ago the plant was eaten. A little bit of knowledge about the plants around us has the potential to prevent a fatal disaster.
In the fall, it’s not uncommon for even the best kept house to acquire an unwanted rodent visitor coming in from the cold. Many homeowners find that rodenticide is an easy solution to the problem. However, dogs and cats often find these morsels as tasty as the rodents do. Rodenticides kill by not allowing activation of clotting factors in the blood, causing the mouse or rat to bleed internally. This action is not specific to rodents, but happens in any animal that ingests the bait. Therefore preventing pets from encountering rodenticide is very important. If you feel you must use rodenticide, place it in areas of the house that dogs and cats do not have access to, like the attic or basement. Be careful when putting bait behind the stove or under furniture, cats can squeeze themselves into remarkably small spaces. Finally if your dogs or cats are allowed outside, check to see if neighbors are baiting their sheds or barns.
Signs of rodenticide exposure can occur anywhere from one day to one week after ingestion. Signs include not eating, lameness, difficulty breathing, excessive bruising, and bleeding from body openings. If you suspect that your pet has ingested rodenticide, call your veterinarian immediately. It is extremely helpful if you can bring the package from the rodenticide used as there are several different kinds. The prognosis for a poisoned pet can vary greatly depending on the amount ingested and the amount of time before treatment begins. The faster you call your veterinarian, the better chance your pet has for survival.
Has your dog or cat just eaten something poisonous? Or was it safe? If you are unsure, read the product label if it is available. Almost all chemicals poisonous to humans are poisonous to our pets as well. Do not attempt to induce vomiting unless the manufacturer suggests it. If you know that your pet drank antifreeze (ethylene glycol), contact your veterinarian, since this is an immediate emergency. There are several drugs that are safe for humans but deadly to our furry friends. These include ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), and acetaminophen (Tylenol). Chocolate can be toxic in high doses (more than 4 ounces of milk chocolate, or 1 ounce of baking chocolate per 10 pounds of dog). Many plants are also toxic; however, contrary to popular belief, the poinsettia is not toxic.
If you are in doubt if your animal has ingested a poison, contact your veterinarian, or call 1-888-232-8870 or 1-888-426-4435. This is a “pay” service, but they are very helpful and knowledgeable.

Once upon a time, I was your average dog owner. I felt guilty when I spoiled my dog with "people food". This concept was reinforced during my veterinary training, with terms like table food gastroenteritis. Oh, the horror of clients feeding table scrapes to their dogs! After the reprimand, instructions to feed only commercial dog foods were made and the deal was done. Poor Fido was banned from the family dining room and forced to eat the same boring dog food everyday.
Before the advent of commercial pet food diets some 50 years ago, family dogs thrived from the benefit of common sense and our grandmother’s cooking. Before the craze of pre-packed convenience foods, the relatives of today’s modern dog enjoyed and prospered eating the same foods we did. That’s right folks -- those dogs belonging to your grandparents ate real people food and thrived. We are not talking Big Macs and French fries, just fresh meats, whole grains and all the vegetables that a dog could dig up in the garden. Sadly, today’s modern dog suffers from the economics of food technology, which has failed to live up to its claims of being a “natural” and “nutritionally balanced” diet.
So, let's first ask the question, what is an "all natural" dog food? I believe the meaning of “natural” would have its roots in Mother Nature herself and therefore be something that exists in nature. Bags of kibble and cans of dog food only exist on the shelves of pet food supermarkets! So, the next time you are hunting down the aisles of your favorite pet store, don’t fall for hyped-up advertising claims of dog food being “all natural” or their newest buzz word, “holistic”. Instead, grab hold of your common sense and think about it. Is this how you eat? Furthermore, there is nothing natural about forcing your dog to eat the same diet day after day. And Mother Nature herself never stopped to read the ingredients on a label. She simply designed the ancestral dog to catch and kill prey animals. Remember the advertising slogan used in a popular ad for margarine, “It’s not nice to fool Mother Nature.” It carried a warning not to try and imitate her genius!
Keep this warning in mind the next time you visit the supermarket and do your dog a favor by picking up a real bird! Still not convinced? Ask your dog what he wants, baked chicken or the stuff in the bag? Without a doubt your dog will gladly pass on a bag filled with inferior protein sources, processed by-products, and preservatives. And for you die-hard skeptics out there, ask yourself why you don't eat the same engineered diet that has been formulated to "meet all your nutritional needs" every day? Do you know how many grams of protein, units of vitamin E, milligrams of calcium, and number of calories you eat every day?
Let's face it folks, the billion dollar pet food industry is thriving because of attractive ads, endorsements by veterinarians who fail to recognize that people are smart enough to cook for their dogs, and the sad fact that convenience itself has become too popular in our everyday lives. Remember the basic tenets of good nutrition: go for variety, choose fresh wholesome ingredients, and avoid processed foods. Commercial pet foods violate all the basic principals of this sound nutritional advice. For my dogs and the clients that I council, the conversation pretty much ends when I pop the final question: Would you eat anything labeled as dog food?
Not only do pet foods contain ingredients that dogs and cats were not designed to eat, there is documentation that pet foods can contain toxins and harmful bacteria and can make your dog sick!
Thanks be to those who challenge the status quo and then prove it wrong. When I learned that Donald Strombeck, DVM, PhD, a professor of mine who taught gastroenterology at the School of Veterinary Medicine at U.C. Davis, CA, had written a book entitled Home Prepared Dog and Cat Diets—the Healthful Alternative, I knew he had something sobering to say. At first I was simply reassured by his statement that diet is one of the most important considerations in a pet's care and that it is a major determinate of health and life expectancy. Wow, after 40 years of his work in gastroenterology, my professor confirms the connection between diet and health. He then goes on to blow the whistle on the pet food industry! Not only did he report that pet foods are not nutritionally complete and balanced, but sited nutritional deficiencies that result from feeding prepared diets that are very different from the diet of a foraging animal. Not only do pet foods contain ingredients that dogs and cats were not designed to eat, there is documentation that pet foods can contain toxins and harmful bacteria and can make your dog sick!
How can this happen? Because of the failure to regulate the pet food industry and set minimum standards as to quality of ingredients used in the manufacturing process. Bottom line: your dog is not protected from ingesting harmful and even deadly contaminants. In short, our food supply is under the watchful eye of the USDA . Anything labeled as pet food also carries the warning: Not for human consumption! Is it any wonder why veterinarians are called to treat so many mysterious cases of vomiting and diarrhea, often labeled as inflammatory bowel disease or food intolerance, which magically resolve when they are switched to homemade diets…
If you truly value the health of your dog, you cannot afford to ignore the importance of good nutrition. What you choose to feed your dog will ultimately decide his fate in terms of health, longevity, and the quality of his life. So, add some extra people food (poultry, fish, eggs, cottage cheese, brown rice and veggies) to your grocery list and invite your hungry dog back into the kitchen!

That's the beauty of pumpkin - you can just mix a few tablespoons along with your pup's normal dry food! In fact, the American Kennel Club just wrote a great article about how pumpkin can help holistically treat diarrhea!
INGREDIENTS:
2 1/2 cups brown rice flour
2 tbsp flax seed
2 extra-large eggs, lightly beaten
3/4 cup canned pumpkin puree
1/4 cup cold water
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
Combine brown rice flour and flax meal in a large bowl. Mix eggs and pumpkin together in a separate bowl until smooth. Add half of the pumpkin mixture to the brown rice mixture, stir, then add the rest and stir again with a wooden spoon. Add water slowly, as needed. Use your hands to knead the dough together.
Roll dough out between two pieces of waxed or parchment paper to desired thickness (about 1/4" thick). Remove top piece of paper, flip dough onto a counter coated with brown rice flour, remove wax paper, and then cut biscuits using a knife or cookie cutter. Re-roll and cut scraps until you’ve used every possible bit of dough.
Place biscuits on parchment-lined baking sheets (or sheets lightly greased with oil). Bake for 30 to 45 minutes until the top of the biscuit has dried out completely. Let biscuits cool on wire racks, then store in an airtight container.
(Makes 36 large dog biscuits.) ENJOY!
